Former Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president in 2024, will campaign with U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan next week.
El-Sayed's campaign said Harris will join El-Sayed on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at a roundtable discussion on maternal healthcare for Black women.
No other details about the site and time of the roundtable, or whether there would be any public access, was immediately made available.
El-Sayed is the former health director for Detroit and Wayne County. He won the Democratic nomination to Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat and faces Republican former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers in the Nov. 3 general election.
El-Sayedsupported Harris for president in 2024. In Michigan, Harris was defeated by President Donald
Trump 49.7%-48.3%as he won reelection after losing to President Joe Biden in 2020.
El-Sayed's campaign said the roundtable discussion with Harris will also "include medical providers and women who will share their stories on the disparities facing Black mothers in pregnancy and giving birth." Black women in Michigan are twice as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes compared to white women, with most of those deaths considered preventable, the campaign said.
