As we head down the stretch of the Florida high school football season, teams are beginning to find their spots in district standings and playoff brackets.
In Ocala and Marion County, several teams have put themselves in postseason contention thanks to group efforts led by highlight individuals.
We're pulling a few of them to the top of the list and seeing who you would choose as your area football player of the year at the midway point. Stats are taken from team pages on MaxPreps.com.
Take a look at our nominees and then make your choice in the ballot below. Fans can vote as frequently as they would like, with the poll closing at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. Winners will be announced in Ocala.com Week 7 live updates that comes out on Oct. 2.
Ocala Florida high school football midseason player of the year nominees
Gabe Caro, Belleview: Has more than 1,000 yards of total offense at quarterback for the Rattlers (836 passing, 218 rushing) and 20 tackles on defense for the 3-2 Rattlers.
Terrance Lewis, Vanguard: Against the area’s toughest schedule, Lewis has more than held his own for the Knights’ offense. Through his team’s first three games, he had nearly 700 yards of offense and eight total touchdowns.
Armani McFarland, Lake Weir: The Hurricanes QB leads offensive players in total yardage at 1,082 and total touchdowns with 18 (13 passing, 5 rushing) for a revived Lake Weir squad.
Christian Neal, Forest: His seven touchdowns include six short-yardage scores on offense and a 95-yard interception return to the house for the undefeated Wildcats.
Tony Tanner, Dunnellon: Leads Marion County in rushing through his team’s first five games at 487 yards and is tied for the county lead in non-passing touchdowns at seven. He also has 23 tackles on defense.
The Forest defense: The Wildcats’ offense has been solid in a 5-0 start, but the defense has definitely led the way: 52 tackles for loss, including 23 sacks, as well as four picks and three recovered fumbles.
