A new era is coming to Springfield baseball, as the Springfield Cardinals announced they will soon adopt a new team name, bringing an end to more than two decades under the Cardinals brand.
General Manager Dan Reiter made the announcement ahead of Tuesday's game against the San Antonio Missions, saying that the team will undergo a full rebrand in 2027, complete with a new name, logos and uniforms. The minor league team will remain in Springfield, its home since 2005, continue playing at Route 66 Stadium and remain the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Professional baseball has a long history in the Ozarks dating back to 1905," Reiter said. "We'll always cherish the Springfield Cardinals era, and we are excited to open this new chapter."
The rebrand aims to establish an identity that better represents Springfield and southwest Missouri, according to the organization. The Cardinals' new name has already been chosen and will be revealed at a free brand launch party at Route 66 Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 6. More details about the event are expected in the coming weeks.
The Cardinals have 17 regular season games remaining, including 11 at home, before the start of the Texas League playoffs, with their final game scheduled for Sept. 13. If the reigning Texas League champions secure a second-half championship, Route 66 Stadium could host as many as three postseason games this September.
