Ten seniors from five Springfield-area high schools have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing them among the nation's top academic performers.
The National Merit Scholarship Corp.
announced the semifinalists Wednesday, Sept. 9. More than 16,000 students nationwide earned the honor from a pool of about 1.2 million who took the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.The students will compete for about 6,700 scholarships worth roughly $24 million to be awarded next spring.
Semifinalists must meet additional academic requirements and submit an application to advance to finalist standing. About 95% are expected to become finalists, and roughly half of those students will earn scholarships.
Founded
in 1955, the nonprofit National Merit Scholarship Corp. administers the program without government funding.
Scholarships awarded in spring 2027 will include National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored scholarships and college-sponsored scholarships.
Winners will be announced between April and July 2027.
