A motorcyclist died Monday morning after striking a pickup truck on Kearney Street.
Springfield Police Department responded to a two-vehicle crash at 9:14 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at Kearney and Patterson Avenue, according an SPD news release.
Melvin Sommerfeld, 78, was driving a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup east on Kearney in the center lane and turned left to drive north on Patterson. As he was turning, 62-year-old Robin Parker, riding a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle west on Kearney, struck the pickup truck.
According to the release, Parker was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Cris Swaters, SPD chief spokesperson, told the News-Leader that while a helmet was located at the scene, it was not immediately clear whether Parker was wearing it at the time
of the crash.

Parker was the 12th person killed in a motor vehicle crash in Springfield this year.
