City Utilities of Springfield is expanding efforts to help customers lower water use and utility costs through a new toilet replacement program for qualifying households and larger rebates for high-efficiency toilet purchases.
The utility announced the changes Oct. 15, according to a community announcement. The new income-eligible program will provide free WaterSense-labeled toilets and installation for qualifying City Utilities water customers who previously received Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program assistance and have higher-than-average water use.
Customers selected for the program will be contacted directly by City Utilities during the next year. Participating households may receive installation of up to three replacement toilets
at no cost through a City Utilities contractor.
“We know that every dollar matters,” Marsha McClanahan, director of Energy Services and Renewables, said in the announcement. “As we make investments to ensure the reliability of our water system for decades to come, we’re equally focused on helping our neighbors use water wisely and manage their monthly bills.”
Rebate program increases for water customers
City Utilities also increased its existing WaterSense toilet rebate for residential and commercial water customers.
The rebate now provides up to $100 per qualifying toilet, up from the previous $75 rebate.
According to the announcement, replacing older toilets with WaterSense-labeled models can reduce household water consumption because qualifying toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush or less. Older toilets may use between 3.5 and 7 gallons per flush.
City Utilities said in the announcement that the upgrades can save thousands of gallons of water annually for a typical household while helping reduce water bills.
