Grace Irwin, a former journalism teacher, celebrated her 100th birthday on September 19, 1990, in the Cambridge Retirement Center on Jefferson Avenue in Springfield.
Ben Willis (pictured), along with other Central High School journalism students, helped Irwin mark her notable milestone.
Born in Greene County in 1890, Irwin was the daughter of Lucian and Ida Spangler and became a member of the second graduating class of Senior High School, now Central High School, in 1909. On June 12, 1912, she married Charles Irwin, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, at her parents' home.
In addition to teaching journalism, she spent part of her career working as a postmistress.
