DALLAS — The Texas Two-Step ended with a pair of losses for Missouri State.
The Bears held an early lead against No. 22-ranked SMU, but the Mustangs bounced back for a34-24win on Saturday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
Missouri State falls to 1-3 overall, with two losses coming in the Lone Star State this month. The Casey Woods era began on Sept. 5 with a loss to Texas A&M in College Station.
The Bears jumped out to a 10-0 lead for the second year in a row against the Mustangs. Yousef Obeid had a field goal last year in the first quarter and matched that this year with a 35-yarder at the 2:17 mark for the first points of the game.
Senior Joel Boamah’s 60-yard interception return for a score with 41 seconds left in the first helped the Bears expand their lead. The Kent State transfer secured the program’s first-ever defensive touchdown as an FBS program on the play.
SMU (3-1) then scored 21 unanswered points after falling behind 10-0.
The Mustangs led 14-10 at halftime, the same score as last year. SMU picked up a 28-10 win last year, behind an offense guided by Woods.
Missouri State pulled within 21-16 on a touchdown pass from Skyler Locklear to Isaiah Myers with 12:16 left in the fourth quarter. Locklear then ran in the conversion to make it 21-18.
SMU answered on the next drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Jennings to Yamir Knight with 5:34 left.
Jennings broke 3 school records in the game: career completions, career passing yards, and consecutive completions, with 21, besting the old mark of 19 in a row by former NFL quarterback Josh McCown.
