A Sunday night shooting in west Springfield is being investigated as a homicide after one man was killed.
The Springfield Police Department responded to a shooting at 7:52 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, in the 2500 block of West Water Street, according to an SPD news release. Officers found 32-year-old Paxton Barnett, of Springfield, with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.
SPD identified Darvin Toman, 36, as the suspect and he was located and arrested by Greene County Sheriff's Office deputies, according to the release. According to Greene County Jail online database, he was booked into jail Monday morning, Aug. 10. Toman has several other criminal charges pending in Greene County, including a misdemeanor fourth-degree
assault charge and a felony of driving while revoked. Charges on the Aug. 9 shooting had not yet been officially filed as of noon Aug. 10.

This is Springfield's eighth homicide investigation in 2026.
