SPRINGFIELD — Without conscious thought, humans use their senses every second of the day.
So, how does Missouri’s most premier high school quarterback utilize his five senses every play? Nixa’s Adam McKnight was more than willing to break down his operation.
He doesn’t just think he has just five senses, though.
“I like to think I have that sixth sense,” he said, smiling. “I can feel when pressure is coming my way, and I can escape it.”
McKnight broke the Nixa school record for career passing yards. After leading Nixa to a big win over Republic, McKnight has thrown for 4,042 career yards. He surpassed Connor Knatcal’s 4,005 yards.
One of McKnight’s greatest skills is his vision.
In the pocket, his eyes are continually scanning the field. When it’s time to run, McKnight’s ability to survey blockers and move against the defense is exceptional.
“I love watching the little things that a defense does,” McKnight said. “You can pick up the way that they are leaning.”
The quarterback touches the ball on almost every play. McKnight’s grip and release point are what make him an accurate passer.
“I love when the ball is in my hands,” McKnight said. “When the ball is in my hands, I feel at home and at ease.”
The use of hearing may be a quarterback’s most underrated sense. Not only must he hear the play call from the sidelines, but the quarterback must also listen to feedback from teammates and those around him, with a raucous crowd screaming.
“Whenever you score, it’s hard not to hear this Nixa crowd,” McKnight said.
The final two senses, taste and smell, may be the least utilized by a quarterback. The smell of a lit grill from the parking lot, coupled with fireworks, creates a great ambiance at Nixa. McKnight has the same pregame meal each week: pasta.
“I got to get my carbs,” McKnight said. “They feed us, and I like it.”
McKnight and Nixa will go on the road to Webb City (3-0) on Friday, Sept. 18.
