Springfield Mayor Jeff Schrag will present a National Family Literacy Day proclamation to members of the Rachel Donelson Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution on Oct. 26, ahead of the Nov. 1 observance.
The proclamation will be presented in the mayor's office at 11:30 a.m., according to a community announcement. The chapter also plans to donate children's books to Mercy Hospital and Cox Medical Center South in recognition of National Family Literacy Day.
National Family Literacy Day was established by Congress in 1994 to promote reading and learning among families and highlight the role parents play in children's education.
The annual observance is marked by literacy-focused activities in communities across the country,
including read-a-thons, book drives, workshops and family programs at schools, libraries and community centers.

Education is one of the core missions of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, which supports and promotes literacy programs, according to the announcement.
The organization said in the announcement that National Family Literacy Day helps draw attention to the importance of lifelong learning and family engagement in reading.
