With the preseason now out of the way, the Kansas City Chiefs will face their longtime divisional foe, the Denver Broncos, for their first game of the regular season.
The Chiefs and Broncos have one of the NFL's longest-running rivalries. Denver controlled much of the series throughout the '90s and 2000s before Kansas City started taking over in the mid-2010s. In fact, the Broncos went nearly a decade without defeating the Chiefs before ending the drought in 2023.
With last season now behind them, the Chiefs are looking to reclaim their place atop their conference once more.

When did the Chiefs and Broncos last play?
The last time these two teams met was on Christmas Day 2025, with Denver coming away with a 20-13 win. Of course,
it didn't help that Kansas City lost superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a season-ending knee injury just two weeks earlier.
Denver finished the season 14-3 and captured the AFC West title, while Kansas City endured a disappointing 6-11 campaign that ended well short of the playoffs.

Will Patrick Mahomes play in Broncos game?
Despite not playing in any of the preseason games, Mahomes is expected to start the Chiefs' season opener against the Broncos.
"There's a pretty good chance [Mahomes] will go ahead and start, unless something were to come up here in the next couple days," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, Sept. 8. "Most likely, he'll be the guy out there. Other than having a brace on his leg, everything looks normal. He's running around the same way he's always done. I think he'll be fine there."
If Mahomes is available Monday, it will be his first NFL game since suffering tears to both the ACL and LCL in his left knee last season.
