New York ranked third in the nation for coffee-related search interest, according to a new analysis by consumer health researchers at Innerbody.
From the quintessential Greek-style coffee cup found in New York City delis to independent roasters across the state, coffee is an integral part of many New Yorkers’ daily routines.
According to consumer health researchers at Innerbody, nearly 195 million Americans drink coffee at least once a week, and at least two-thirds of American adults drink an average of 2.8 cups of coffee a day.
Innerbody analyzed coffee-related search trends across all 50 states to determine how interested residents were in coffee. Here’s how New York compares with the rest of the country.
What do America's coffee habits look like?
Kansas, California and New York ranked
among the states with the strongest interest in coffee. Kansas came out on top, with the highest number and frequency of coffee-related searches.
Unlike the other top-ranked states, Kansas had more searches related to brewing coffee at home, including queries for personal coffee grinders, coffee makers, espresso beans and how to make a latte.
Innerbody said Kansas’ search results reflect a more traditional American coffee habit of preparing at least the first cup of the day at home before buying coffee from shops or chains.
According to the National Coffee Association, 82% of people who drank coffee on a given day had at least one cup prepared at home, compared with 28% who had coffee prepared only away from home.
States known for their coffee cultures, including Massachusetts and Washington, ranked fourth and seventh, respectively.
Mississippi ranked last among the states for coffee-related searches. Mississippi State University has said sweet tea is the state’s most popular drink, suggesting residents may turn to tea as a caffeine source more often than coffee.
Here are the states that ranked highest and lowest for coffee interest, according to Innerbody’s analysis.
