Two people were killed Sunday after a small plane crashed in the town of Enfield, New York, according to the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responded at about 12:35 p.m. Aug. 30 to the 100 block of North Applegate Road for a report of a plane crash. The Town of Enfield is a rural community in Tompkins County, west of Ithaca in New York's Finger Lakes region.
The plane, a 1977 Lake model LA-4-200, had two occupants.
Who was killed?
David Kornreich, 52, the owner of the plane, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Andrew R. Harrell, 31, was taken to Cayuga Medical Center in critical condition after the crash. He later died from his injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.
The Sheriff's Office expressed condolences to the families
and loved ones of both men.
What caused the plane crash?
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
The preliminary investigation found that the plane was cleared for takeoff from Ithaca Airport at 11:24 a.m. Sunday. The last contact with the airport tower was at 12:02 p.m., according to the Sheriff's Office.
A witness called in the crash at 12:35 p.m. and reported that the plane appeared to be experiencing a mechanical issue before it went down, officials said.
Were there other injuries or damage?
No other people or structures were involved in the crash, according to the Sheriff's Office.
No roadways were shut down.

The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Enfield Fire & Rescue, the Department of Emergency Response, Ithaca Fire Department, Airport Fire Department and Trumansburg Fire Department.
