Kani Walker didn't know if he was going to play in his first NFL preseason game.
By the time it was over, the Buffalo Bills undrafted rookie cornerback had the first interception at new Highmark Stadium.
Walker picked off Carolina Panthers quarterback Kyle Trask in the fourth quarter of Buffalo's 29-14 victory Saturday.
The play was impressive enough on its own. But Walker was a question mark to play until halftime.
Walker, 23, had missed practice leading into the preseason opener with an. The Bills put him through a workout the day before the game, then had him participate in pregame warmups.
That still wasn't enough to know whether he would play.
Walker warmed up again at halftime before finally entering the game in the third quarter.
"I was ready
to take on my opportunity, even if it was going to be drive to drive or three or four plays," Walker said. "Shout-out to the trainers, they helped me make a speedy recovery."
He got 12 defensive snaps.
He only needed one to make everyone notice.

Carolina faced second-and-20 with 6:07 remaining when Trask tried to throw a screen pass to running back Miles Davis.
Walker recognized it.
The 6-foot-2, 203-pound cornerback broke toward the backfield, stepped in front of Davis and intercepted the pass.
Three plays later, Frank Gore Jr. scored on a 3-yard run.
Bills coach Joe Brady was struck by more than the interception.
"A guy like Kani doesn't blink," Brady said. "He didn't practice this week. He found out yesterday. We put him through a workout and was like, hey, you're gonna go out there, and we're gonna go warm you up at halftime and get you ready to go out there and play."
Brady called Walker's read on the interception a "high-level play" for a rookie.
Quarterback Josh Allen cheered from the sideline and the Bills' entire defense mobbed Walker in the end zone to celebrate. Buffalo's defensive backs were still congratulating Walker on the bench when Gore scored the touchdown to capitalize off the interception.
"There's a lot of emotions that are going on when you're just sitting on the sideline," Brady said. "For him to not blink, that was pretty cool."
Why Bills coaches are excited about Kani Walker
Walker wasn't selected in the 2026 NFL Draft after a college career that took him from Louisville to Oklahoma to Arkansas.
He started 11 games for Arkansas last season, finishing with 52 tackles, three tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups and an interception. That interception was memorable: Walker returned it 85 yards for a touchdown against Auburn.
He arrived in Buffalo with an important connection.
Bills cornerbacks coach Jay Valai coached Walker at Oklahoma, giving him some familiarity with the techniques and terminology Buffalo uses.
Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard knows something about taking the more difficult route into the NFL. Leonhard went undrafted himself before playing 10 seasons in the league.
He saw something in Walker early in training camp.
"You always like guys who are the underdog a little bit, that know they have something to prove," Leonhard said. "Certain guys, they know that they have to shut their mouth, do their job and just find a way to be noticed. And he's one of those guys."
Walker has some physical tools that are difficult to overlook.
"He's got size. He's got speed. He's got length," Leonhard said. "And that excites you as a corner."
Leonhard said Walker was doing something every day in training camp that caught the coaching staff's attention.
It carries over into the preseason.

Three days after making the biggest play of his young NFL career, Walker was back at Highmark Stadium for practice.
He gave up a completion.
That was what he wanted to talk about.
"Don't get arrogant," Walker said. "We're only in the preseason. My mindset is way past preseason. Job's not finished."
Walker pointed to the receivers he has to cover every day in practice as a reminder of how quickly one good play stops mattering.
"Just keep stacking, really," Walker said. "I got great coaches and great teammates to help me stay grounded throughout this process. A good high, a good feeling for sure. But just coming out to attack every day to prove.
"Like today, I gave up a catch out here, which I ain't proud of at all."
That response tracks with what Leonhard has seen.
"He's a technician," Leonhard said. "He's one of those guys that takes that very serious. He knows who he is. He's very self-aware of his ability, what he can and can't do."

There is still plenty left to decide before the Bills set their 53-man roster.
"He's still got a long ways to go," Leonhard said. "But at the same time, you're seeing a pretty high level of consistency."
Walker gets another chance Thursday when the Bills practice against the Cleveland Browns.
A week ago, he didn't know whether he'd even get into Buffalo's preseason opener.
"Some of this stuff I'm still dreaming out," Walker said. "I'm still going to go and make the most of my opportunities."
