Ontario County sheriff's deputies have identified the woman killed in an August crash after a medical transport bus she was riding in was struck by a dump truck.
Medical bus collides with dump truck
A 10-wheel dump truck struck the driver's side of a medical transport bus around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Freshour Road and State Route 488 in Hopewell, deputies said.
The impact occurred on the side of the bus where passengers are typically seated.
Ontario County's dispatch center received numerous calls reporting the crash and the severity of the injuries. Some callers reported seeing passengers "hanging out the windows of the bus," Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione said at the scene.
A deputy on patrol was the first to arrive and confirmed the severity of the crash, Cirencione
said.
1 dead, four seriously injured
One passenger was killed in the crash and was identified this week as Tiffany Stewart, 32, the Ontario County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
Four other passengers were seriously injured. They included three women, ages 27, 31 and 32, and a 41-year-old man.
Stewart and the four injured passengers were residents of an assisted living facility for people with developmental disabilities, according to the Sheriff's Office.
A sixth passenger, a 44-year-old man, worked for the facility.
The medical conditions of the four injured passengers nearly eight weeks after the crash were not available.
Who was Tiffany Stewart?
According to her obituary, Stewart "always aimed to help the less fortunate." She loved music, dancing, creating art and swimming.
"She would never miss an opportunity to go to Applebee's," her obituary said.
Stewart, of Clifton Springs, is survived by six siblings, her father and several grandparents, including her grandmother and guardian, Verna Vankoevering.
Bus driver ticketed
In mid-September, the bus driver, a 75-year-old Phelps man, was issued a ticket for failure to yield the right of way, a violation, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office. He suffered minor injuries in the crash.
