New York is suspending temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects over the Labor Day weekend in an effort to ease traffic and improve highway safety.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the closures were suspended from 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Road construction paused across New York
The suspension applies to non-emergency construction activities on New York state highways, according to Hochul's office.
Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or when needed for emergency repairs.
The suspension is part of the state's Drivers First Initiative, which aims to reduce traffic congestion and travel delays caused by road and bridge construction.
Drivers urged to slow down, move over
Despite the construction pause, drivers should remain alert for highway workers,
emergency responders and maintenance crews.
New York's Move Over Law requires drivers to slow down and move over for all vehicles stopped along the roadway.
New York State Police and local law enforcement also are participating in the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign through Monday, Sept. 7. The campaign includes increased patrols and checkpoints targeting impaired and reckless driving.
State officials are urging motorists to drive sober, obey speed limits, avoid distractions and put away their phones.
Thruway service areas remain open
All 27 service areas on the New York State Thruway are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Drivers can check traffic conditions and road closures before traveling through 511NY, including its website and mobile app. The service also provides access to traffic cameras and information about incidents, construction, air travel and public transportation.
Motorists traveling on the Thruway also can use the Thruway Authority's website and mobile app to check traffic conditions, view live cameras and find service areas.
