Section V is approaching the final weeks of the regular season, and some big-time matchups await before giving way to sectionals.
Time is running short for Class A teams in particular, with only two games left before the postseason.
Sportswriters James Johnson, Justin Ritzel and Jeff Uveino will predict three Section V football games each week. Follow along all season to see how the experts fare.
Section V football predictions, Week 6
Matchup No. 1: Pittsford at Hilton
Hilton 35, Pittsford 20: The Cadets score about 48 points a game, and their offense will overwhelm the Pittsford Panthers, too. Hilton might not be spectacular in any area - although Tyler Reger scoring seven touchdowns last week defies that line of thinking - no opponent has exposed any weaknesses either. Do we find out if Pittsford becomes the first
team to consistently pass the ball downfield against the Cadets defense?
Matchup No. 2: McQuaid at East/World of Inquiry
East/World of Inquiry 21, McQuaid 13: Both Rochester City Athletic Conference teams enter the game on two-game winning streaks. When McQuaid played Monroe three weeks ago, the game was competitive for the first half but the Knights came unglued in the second. Facing one of Section V's state-ranked Class B teams, McQuaid keeps it close for four quarters, but Jamie Anderson and Co. keep the Knights at bay in the end.
Matchup No. 3: Canandaigua at Eastridge
Canandaigua 34, Eastridge 28: Eastridge re-established momentum last week. Canandaigua lost it. The Gray Wolves return to Class A2 competition after Fairport (AA) dealt them their first loss of the year. Eastridge, meanwhile, pieced together a 27-14 victory over A2 hopeful Greece Arcadia last week, six days after dropping a tight one to fellow contender Brockport. Super 10 rankings suggest that Canandaigua is the favorite in Class A2. Don’t be surprised, though, if Eastridge’s physicality and athleticism make this one interesting.
