Flash flood warnings were issued early Tuesday for parts of western New York after slow-moving thunderstorms dumped up to 3 inches of rain, prompting concerns about flooded roads, streams and low-lying areas.
The National Weather Service in Buffalo
said additional rainfall of up to 2 inches was possible in some locations, with flash flooding either already occurring or expected to develop before daybreak.Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways and remember the warning: Turn around, don't drown.
Flash flood warning for Niagara County
A flash flood warning remains in effect until 6:30 a.m. Tuesday for central Niagara County.
Communities that could experience flooding include:
- Lockport
- Lewiston
- Sanborn
- Cambria Center
- Ransomville
- Model City
Radar indicated between 1 and 3 inches of rain had already fallen, with another 1 to 2 inches possible.
Flash flood warning for Cattaraugus County
A
separate flash flood warning remains in effect until 5:30 a.m. Tuesday for southeastern Cattaraugus County.
Communities affected include:
- Olean
- Allegany State Park
- Allegany
- St. Bonaventure
- Weston Mills
- Knapp Creek
- Rock City Park
- Vandalia
- Limestone
The weather service said 1 to 3 inches of rain had already fallen, with an additional 0.5 to 1.5 inches possible.
More heavy rain possible Tuesday and Wednesday
The National Weather Service said scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue across western and north-central New York through Tuesday, with additional rounds of heavy rainfall possible.
A marginal risk for excessive rainfall remains in place through Wednesday, meaning slow-moving storms could produce localized flash flooding.
Western New York also faces a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms Tuesday morning, with damaging wind gusts and heavy rain the primary threats.
Beach hazards issued along Lakes Erie and Ontario
The National Weather Service also issued Beach Hazards Statements because of dangerous currents and swimming conditions.
Statements are in effect for:
- Chautauqua County: Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon
- Niagara and Orleans counties: Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening
- Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga and Oswego counties: Tuesday evening through Thursday afternoon
Officials advise residents and visitors to stay out of the water while hazardous swimming conditions persist.
