Josh Allen stands alone in Buffalo Bills history.
The Bills quarterback scored on a 2-yard run against the New England Patriots on Sunday to break the franchise record for touchdowns from scrimmage.
Allen entered the game tied with Hall of Famers Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas with 87 touchdowns. He now has 88.
Allen scored with 1:00 remaining in the second quarter, going up the middle on a quarterback sneak from 2 yards out to tie the game at 14.
He gave the ball to a young fan in the front row. CBS sideline reporter Evan Washburn said that a Bills staff member brought a different ball to the fan to exchange for the game ball.
The touchdown capped a nine-play, 67-yard drive that included Allen's 50-yard completion to Khalil Shakir to the New England
6.
The Bills briefly went backward after Dion Dawkins was called for illegal use of hands on second-and-goal, but Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones was later flagged for defensive holding on a pass intended for DJ Moore. New England coach Mike Vrabel was also assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty between downs, moving Buffalo to the Patriots 6.
James Cook ran for 4 yards before Allen finished the drive himself.
The touchdown was the 86th rushing score of Allen's career. He also has two receiving touchdowns.
Passing touchdowns do not count toward the record because touchdowns from scrimmage are credited to the player who actually carries or catches the ball into the end zone.
Reed scored 87 touchdowns during his 15 seasons with Buffalo, including 86 receiving touchdowns and one rushing score.
Thomas also scored 87 in his 12 seasons with the Bills, 65 rushing and 22 receiving.
Allen needed less than nine full seasons to pass both of them.
The touchdown also continued a remarkable start to the season for Allen as a runner.
He entered Sunday having rushed for two touchdowns in each of Buffalo's first three games, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to begin a season with three straight games with multiple rushing touchdowns.
Allen had six rushing touchdowns through three games after entering the season with 79 in his first eight NFL seasons.
His latest score also moved him past former Bills running back Marshawn Lynch on the NFL's career rushing touchdown list and into a tie with Priest Holmes with 86.
Allen already owns the NFL record for career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
