Fall is officially underway, and New Yorkers are embracing the season.
According to New York’s weekly fall foliage report, spectacular seasonal hues are emerging across the state. Significant color changes are expected this weekend in the Adirondacks, while vibrant colors are beginning to appear in parts of the Catskills and near Utica in Central New York.
So, what are the foliage conditions across the state this week? Here’s the second report of the season from the state Department of Economic Development, broken down by region:
Adirondacks fall foliage
Essex County: Spotters predict a 55% color change on Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, with seasonal colors, and around a 40% color change on the area around the mountain with mostly red and orange leaves. Expect a 40% color change in Newcomb
by the weekend, with average-to-bright shades of red and orange. In Lake Placid, expect a 25% color change by the weekend, bright isolated splashes of crimson, deep red, burnt orange, and soft muted yellows. In Ticonderoga, expect a 20% color transition, with average-to-bright hints of yellow and early shades of orange and red. Spotters predict a 15% color transition in Crown Point, with golden tones on some trees, some russets, and an occasional splash of orange.
Franklin County: Up to a 55% color change in predicted by the weekend in Tupper Lake and Mt. Arab, with copper, butterscotch, butter cup, tangerine, plum and scarlet hues of average brilliance. There is also a 30% color change predicted for the weekend in Malone, with touches of red and orange. In Saranac Lake, a 25% color change is also predicted, with bright and beautiful reds and yellows.
Hamilton County: A 50% color transition is expected by the weekend in Benson, with muted yellow and bronze leaves, plus scattered pockets of red, burgundy and orange. Spotters also predict an 40% color change by the weekend in Lake Pleasant, with bright shades of red and orange and a few yellows. A 40% color transition is also expected by the weekend in Long Lake, with red hues along with bright orange and some splashes of yellow.
Herkimer County: Spotters predict a 35% change in Old Forge with increasing shades of red, burgundy, orange and gold.
St. Lawrence County: A 35% color transition is expected by the weekend in Wanakena with brilliant shades of red and vibrant oranges and yellows, and some leaf droppage.
Warren County: Observers predict a 20% color change by the weekend in Queensbury, with muted yellow and orange leaves. In Lake George, expect a 20% color transition, with small patches of yellow and orange.
Lewis County: Expect a 20% color change by the weekend in Greig with some average-to-bright yellow and orange leaves emerging. Scattered maples are showing vivid orange and red, with some yellow appearing on birches along the creek.
Catskills fall foliage
Delaware County: In Dehli, expect a 30% color transition by the weekend with bright touches of seasonal hues. Certain pockets and valleys are approaching midpoint with most of the trees frosted with yellow, gold and orange. Spotters predict a 30% foliage change in Colchester, Roscoe and Downsville with increasing patches of very bright red, orange and yellow leaves. They also forecast a 20% change in Stamford, Bloomville, with mostly yellow leaves.
Greene County: Observers predict up to a 30% color transition in the upper elevations of Windham, with yellow, orange and red leaves. Expect a 15% transition at Hunter Mountain with yellow hues emerging and scattered bright speckles of red, yellow and orange, and a 10% change in Acra, with scattered bright pops of red and orange. A 5% change in Catskill is also predicted by the weekend, with a few bright pops of red and yellow.
Ulster County: Spotters predict a 25% color change at Belleayre Mountain in Highmount, with bright, brilliant yellow and orange leaves and some spots of purple. The greatest color changes are primarily in the north-facing aspects and higher elevations.
Sullivan County: Spotters predict a 15% color change in Forestburgh, with average-to-bright autumn colors.
Capital-Saratoga fall foliage
Fulton County: A 30% change in Stratford is expected by the weekend, with yellow, red and orange shades. The northern part of town could see up to 40% transition. Spotters also predict a 15% change in Northville, with brilliant pops of oranges and reds.
Rensselear County: Spotters predict a 25% change in East Nassau, with pops of gold, rust and red. A nearly 20% change is predicted in Brunswick, with patches of deep red, light yellow, and orange showing on some trees and shrubs, especially at higher elevations. Expect a 15% color change in Troy, with muted touches of orange.
Albany County: In Voorheeseville, observers predict up to a 20% color change at Thacher State Park, with mostly red and orange leaves. Spotters also predict a up to a 15% change in Cohoes at Cohoes Falls., with muted shades of orange and yellow.
Saratoga County: Expect a 15% change in Saratoga Springs by the weekend, with red and orange leaves.
Schenectady County: Expect a 15% change in Central Park in Schenectady with pops of yellow, orange, rust and some muted red. Spotters also predict a 10% color change in Rotterdam, with some yellow leaves emerging.
Central New York fall foliage
Otsego County: Spotters predict up to a 35% change in Cherry Valley with some yellow leaves and a 20% change in Cooperstown with muted oranges and yellows
Schoharie County: A 35% color change in Sharon Springs is expected by the weekend, with yellow leaves, and some emerging orange and red hue leaves beginning to appear.
Oneida County: Expect a 30% color transition in Utica by the weekend, with muted-to-average yellows, reds and oranges.
Broome County: Spotters predict a 25% foliage change in Binghamton with spots of bright red and orange, and some yellow.
Chenango County: A 15% change in Norwich is predicted by the weekend, with some muted-to-average reds and yellows.
Herkimer County: Spotters predict a 15% change in Herkimer with muted fall colors.
Madison County: A 10% color change in Cazenovia is expected by the weekend, with an emerging mix of fall hues.
Montgomery County: Expect around a 5% change in Fonda with a touch of red and yellow.
Chautauqua-Allegheny fall foliage
Cattaraugus County: Spotters predict a 10% foliage change in Little Valley by the weekend, with a few yellow leaves. A 5% change is predicted in Salamanca at Allegany State Park with a few hints of fall color.
Chautauqua County: Expect a 10% change in Chautauqua, with some mixed fall colors emerging over the mostly green backdrop.
Finger Lakes fall foliage
Cayuga County: Observers predict a 20% color transition in Auburn by the weekend, with muted-to-average yellow leaves and hints of red. A 20% change is also predicted in Moravia and Locke, with muted shades of burnt orange.
Cortland County: Expect a 20% change in Cortland and Marathon by the weekend, with yellow leaves, along with a few red and purple maples.
Ontario County: Spotters predict a 15% color change in Canandaigua, with touches of yellow and a few spots of red.
Tioga County: By the weekend, expect a 15% color transition in Owego, with touches of red and yellow leaves.
Onondaga County: Spotters predict a 10% change in Syracuse with some orange, red and yellow leaves.
Steuben County: Observers predict a 10% color change in Corning, Hammondsport, Bath and Hornell with a few emerging fall colors. They also expect a 10% color transition in Painted Post by the weekend, with mostly yellow leaves.
Livingston County: In Geneseo, expect less than a 10% change by the weekend, with some emerging yellow. Spotters also predict a 5% change in Mt. Morris, at the north end of Letchworth State Park, with yellow and a little red.
Tompkins County: Spotters expect less than 10% color change in Ithaca and Trumansburg by the weekend, with pops of yellow and orange just beginning to show.
Wayne County: In Lyons, a 10% color change is predicted by the weekend, with shades of yellow and muted orange emerging.
Chemung County: Spotters predict a 5% change in Elmira with a few bright fall colors beginning to appear.
Seneca County: Spotters predict a 5% change in Seneca Falls with a few yellow leaves and up to 5% color transition in Waterloo with mostly green leaves.
Schuyler County: In Watkins Glen and Odessa, expect a 5% color transition by the weekend.
Yates County: Expect up to 5% change in Penn Yan by the weekend.
Greater Niagara fall foliage
Niagara County: Spotters predict a 20% change in Niagara Falls by the weekend, with touches of yellow and orange.
Wyoming County: Expect a 15% change in Warsaw, with small pockets of orange, red and yellow. At the southern end of Letchworth Sate Park and Castile, expect a 5% color transition with yellow and a few hints of red.
Genesee County: Observers predict a 10% change in Batavia with muted yellow-green leaves.
Erie County: Spotters expect less than 10% foliage change in Springville with mostly green leaves. They also predict a 5% color transition by the weekend in Buffalo and East Aurora, which has touches of yellow.
Orleans County: In Albion, expect a 5% color transition by the weekend with a small mix of fall colors.
Thousand Islands-Seaway fall foliage
St. Lawrence County: Expect a 20% change in Potsdam by the weekend, with pops of reds, oranges and yellows. Spotters also predict a 20% color transition at Eisenhower Lock in Massena, with some yellow and a touch or red.
Oswego County: Observers predict a 15% change in Pulaski with purple and reddish-orange leaves. A 5% color transition is expected in Oswego with some brown leaves.
Jefferson County: A 10% foliage change is predict by the weekend in Alexandria Bay with yellow and shades of orange.
Hudson Valley fall foliage
Ulster County: A 15% color transition is expected by the weekend in New Paltz with yellow and brown leaves and red splashes. Spotters also expect l ess than 10% change in Kingston with a touch of yellow and red.
Columbia County: Spotters predict a 10% foliage change in Hudson, with a small mix of emerging fall colors.
Orange County: Observers predict a 10% change in Goshen by the weekend, with a few muted yellow and brown leaves. A 5% change is predicted in Greenville and Newburgh, with hints of orange. Less than 5% color transition is expected in Cornwall.
Westchester County: In White Plains and Jefferson Valley, expect a 10% color change by the weekend, with some yellow-orange leaves.
Dutchess County: Expect a 5% color change in Beacon and Poughkeepsie, with some red and yellow leaves.
Rockland County: Spotters predict more than a 5% change in Pomona by the weekend, with touches of yellow and brown. A 5% color change in Orangeburg is also predicted.
Long Island fall foliage
Nassau County: Spotters report a 10% foliage change at Valley Stream State Park in Hempstead with a few muted fall colors appearing on the top of maple trees. They also predict less than 10% change at Hempstead Lake State Park in West Hempstead with dashes of crimson.
Suffolk County: Expect a 5% color change along the North Shore by the weekend, with some red, yellow and brown leaves. Less than 5% change at Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island with mostly green leaves.
New York City fall foliage
More than 5% color transition is expected on the Upper East Side in Central Park in Manhattan, with mostly green leaves and some muted browns. A 5% color transition is also predicted on the Lower East Side of Manhattan by the weekend.
