Strong to severe thunderstorms are threatening parts of New York through Wednesday evening, with forecasters warning of damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes and localized flooding.
The National Weather Service has issued multiple severe thunderstorm warnings across Western and Central New York as storms move east. A tornado watch remains in effect for portions of Western and Central New York until 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to the NWS.
How long will the severe weather threat last?
The greatest threat is expected through Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service. Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect into the 7-8 p.m. hour for parts of Western New York, while a tornado watch covering a large portion of the region remains in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected through tonight, with some storms capable of producing damaging winds, hail and an isolated tornado.
Rochester area under severe weather alerts
The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Monroe County and surrounding areas Wednesday evening, warning that storms could produce wind gusts of up to 70 mph. The warning also said a tornado was possible and urged residents to seek shelter immediately if one was spotted.
Earlier Wednesday, Monroe County Executive Adam J. Bello urged residents to take precautions as severe thunderstorms and the risk of isolated tornadoes moved through the area. County emergency officials said they were closely monitoring weather updates from the NWS Buffalo office.

The National Weather Service said the strongest storms could produce:
- Damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph.
- Large hail.
- Isolated tornadoes.
- Torrential rainfall and localized flash flooding.
The NWS advises people under a severe thunderstorm warning to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows.

Monroe County officials are encouraging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from downed power lines, prepare for possible power outages and secure outdoor items that could become airborne in strong winds. Residents who depend on electrically powered medical equipment should have backup plans in place.
