A 25-year-old Oneonta man was killed after a deer struck by an SUV was thrown into the path of his motorcycle Friday evening, according to New York State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash on County Highway 48 in the town of Oneonta at about 7:40 p.m. July 31.
How the crash happened
State Police said a 74-year-old Otego man was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox west on County Highway 48 when a deer entered the roadway.
The driver was unable to avoid the animal and struck it. The impact propelled the deer into the eastbound lane, where it collided with an oncoming KTM motorcycle and its operator.
The motorcyclist lost control and crashed.
Victim identified
The motorcyclist was identified as Nathaniel T. Walker, 25, of Oneonta.
The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox and a passerby began lifesaving
efforts after receiving CPR instructions from an Otsego County 911 dispatcher. A New York State trooper arrived and continued CPR until Oneonta Fire Department and EMS personnel took over.
Despite those efforts, Walker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation continues
State Police said the investigation remains ongoing, but there is no indication that foul play or impairment contributed to the crash.
