Brockport held a daylong vigil to remember those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at the village’s 9/11 Memorial Monument at Brockport Fire District Station 4.
The vigil included a mobile 9/11 museum and several ceremonies throughout the day to honor the victims and first responders who died in the attacks.
Opening ceremony begins vigil
The vigil began with a morning opening ceremony. Members of SUNY Brockport’s ROTC program led a flag ceremony, followed by the ringing of the memorial bell.
The bell-ringing ceremony is a Brockport tradition that commemorates how the Fire Department of New York signaled the loss of a firefighter 25 years ago at the time of the first strike.
After the opening ceremony, community members had the opportunity to visit
the 9/11 Memorial Monument throughout the day. An Honor Guard stood vigil at the memorial.
Mobile 9/11 museum
Visitors also had the opportunity to walk through the station’s mobile 9/11 museum.
The exhibit included first responder tags of remembrance, lists of victims’ names, images and other media documenting the attacks.
Vigil ends with Ring of Gold ceremony
The all-day vigil concluded with a "Ring of Gold Ceremony," during which command personnel gathered around the memorial for a moment of silence before the closing ceremony.
The vigil was attended by members of the Brockport community, including Brockport Mayor Ben Reed, SUNY Brockport President Dawn Meza-Soufleris and Sweden Town Supervisor Patricia Hayes.
