For the 11th consecutive year, Wegmans has topped Fortune magazine’s list of the best workplaces in retail.
The ranking is based on survey responses from more than 76,000 employees at retail companies certified by Great Place To Work.
Earlier this year, Wegmans ranked fifth on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for 2026, compiled in partnership with Great Place To Work.
According to Wegmans employees surveyed, 96% said the company is welcoming. Additionally, 95% rated store service as excellent and said they felt good about the company's contributions to their communities. Another 94% said they could take time off when necessary, and 93% said the company's facilities contributed to a good working environment.
Fortune praised Wegmans for
its commitment to employees, writing that the company “prioritizes their employees to the extent that is rarely seen.” The magazine also highlighted the company's willingness to accommodate employees' work preferences and personal circumstances.
“It is an incredible honor to be named the #1 Best Workplace in Retail in America for the 11th consecutive year,” Colleen Wegman, president and CEO of Wegmans Food Markets, said in a statement. “There is nothing more important to us so this is a tremendous celebration belonging to every person at Wegmans. We are inspired by the way our people bring our shared values to life every day and make the commitment every day you get our best.”
The survey responses offer a broad picture of employees' workplace experiences. Companies are selected based on their ability to provide positive outcomes for employees regardless of job role, work status or other demographic characteristics.
Companies pay an undisclosed fee to become Great Place To Work certified, but “their placement on the list cannot be bought,” according to Fortune's certification FAQ. “The rankings are determined by an impartial analysis of employee feedback and cultural practices.”
In 2026, Wegmans also earned spots on Fortune's Best Workplaces in New York and 100 Best Companies to Work For lists. The company was also named to the PEOPLE Companies That Care list.
