Eight tornadoes touched down in New York on Wednesday, Sept. 2, as powerful thunderstorms swept across New York, according to National Weather Service damage surveys.
Seven tornadoes were rated EF1, while the tornado in the Seneca County town of Fayette was rated EF2. The tornadoes touched down in Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Monroe and Seneca counties.
No injuries or deaths were reported in connection with the eight tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.
Olcott tornado
An EF1 tornado touched down in Olcott in Niagara County at 6:07 p.m. and remained on the ground for about one minute. It had estimated peak winds of 105 mph, a maximum width of 70 yards and a path length of 0.67 miles.
The tornado crossed the Great Lakes Seaway
Trail and entered the southern portion of Krull Park, where it snapped and uprooted mature pine trees. The National Weather Service said the storm had previously produced a waterspout, but surveyors could not determine whether the waterspout moved ashore.
East Shelby tornado
An EF1 tornado touched down southeast of Medina in Orleans County at 6:45 p.m. It had estimated peak winds of 105 mph and traveled 1.2 miles over two minutes.
The tornado toppled trees before crossing East Shelby Road, where it caused significant tree damage near several homes and minor structural damage to one residence. It continued through a wooded area before lifting west of Townline Road.
East of Alexander tornado
A high-end EF1 tornado touched down east-northeast of Alexander in Genesee County at 7:29 p.m. The tornado had estimated peak winds of 110 mph and traveled 3.78 miles over six minutes.
The National Weather Service documented damage to cornfields and trees near Route 20, West Bethany Road, Silver Road and Mill Road. A cluster of large locust trees was snapped, and sporadic tree damage continued toward the Genesee-Wyoming county line.
Webster-Ontario tornado
An EF1 tornado touched down northeast of Webster in Monroe County at 7:30 p.m. and traveled into western Wayne County before lifting four minutes later. It had estimated peak winds of 105 mph, a maximum width of 130 yards and a path length of 3.23 miles.
The tornado snapped and uprooted trees, knocked down power poles and damaged homes in a subdivision near the Monroe-Wayne county line. Its path included areas near Salt Road, Route 104, Basket Road, Ridge Road and North Lincoln Road.
Letchworth State Park tornado
An EF1 tornado touched down near the southern end of Letchworth State Park in Livingston County at 7:59 p.m. It had estimated peak winds of 110 mph and traveled 1.25 miles over two minutes.
Dozens of large trees were snapped or uprooted along East Parade Grounds Road. Several trees fell on a park pavilion, significantly damaging the structure. The tornado dissipated in a wooded area north of Route 436.
Portageville tornado
A separate EF1 tornado touched down west of Portageville in Wyoming County at 8 p.m. It had estimated peak winds of 105 mph, a maximum width of 300 yards and a path length of 1.22 miles.
The tornado caused significant tree damage near Griffith Road, Route 19A and the Portageville entrance to Letchworth State Park before dissipating near the Genesee River. The National Weather Service determined that it and the nearby Livingston County tornado were separate tornadoes with distinct damage paths.
Waterloo-Seneca Falls tornado
An EF1 tornado touched down northwest of Waterloo in Seneca County at 8:21 p.m. It had estimated peak winds of 95 mph and traveled 6.69 miles before ending north-northwest of Seneca Falls at 8:34 p.m.
The tornado damaged trees around Waterloo, passed near the Seneca County Office Building and struck a commercial tent near the Seneca Falls border. The storm also produced intense downburst winds that damaged a hangar and overturned a small aircraft at Finger Lakes Regional Airport.
Town of Fayette tornado
The outbreak’s strongest confirmed tornado touched down south-southwest of Rose Hill in the Seneca County town of Fayette at 8:23 p.m. The EF2 tornado had estimated peak winds of 115 mph and traveled 7.76 miles over 13 minutes.
The tornado destroyed a garage and sheds, severely damaged or leveled barns and outbuildings, snapped power poles and scattered debris across farm properties. At one property on Watts Road, debris from a destroyed heifer barn struck a house and broke windows.
The tornado weakened near Seybolt Road before ending south-southwest of Canoga. Damaging thunderstorm winds continued into Cayuga County after the tornado dissipated.
