A man who allegedly approached a New York State Police trooper while brandishing a handgun at a Greene County campground was shot and killed by a responding trooper, State Police said.
Initial call to campground
New York State Police were called to the Whip-O-Will Campground, 644 Route 31 in Cairo, around 8:20 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, to investigate a report of an assault involving two men.
Troopers found a man who had suffered a head injury at the campground and were directed to a nearby camper, where they found the second man involved in the incident, according to State Police.
Armed man approaches trooper
A man exited the camper and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at a trooper as he walked toward the trooper, State Police said.
The trooper fired his service weapon, striking the man.
Man dies at scene
Troopers immediately
provided medical aid and requested emergency medical services, according to State Police. The man, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 88-acre campground is in central Greene County, about 30 miles south of Albany, and has approximately 280 campsites, according to the campground's website.

The New York Attorney General's Office and the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Catskill are investigating the trooper-involved shooting death.
