Millions of Americans who receive Social Security benefits each month are watching for the latest details on the Social Security Administration’s 2027 cost-of-living adjustment and how much their benefits could increase next year.
Social Security’s annual cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, determines how much benefits will increase in 2027. The adjustment can affect recipients’ monthly budgets, spending and retirement planning.
The official COLA announcement is not expected until October, but the latest forecasts offer an early look at what beneficiaries could see.
What is the latest 2027 Social Security COLA estimate?
Several recent forecasts place the 2027 COLA in the mid-3% range.
The latest estimates suggest the 2027 adjustment could be around 3.5% to 3.6%, according to forecasts from AARP and
The Senior Citizens League.
If those projections hold, it would be a larger increase than beneficiaries received for 2026 and the biggest annual adjustment since 2023. This year, Social Security beneficiaries received a 2.8% cost-of-living increase.
Independent Social Security analyst Mary Johnson recently estimated a 3.4% COLA, while advocacy group The Senior Citizens League projected a 3.6% increase. Other projections generally range from about 3.2% to 3.6%, depending on assumptions about inflation during the next two months.
The estimates are not official and could change as additional inflation data is released.
How much could Social Security checks increase in 2027?
The average monthly Social Security retirement benefit was about $2,086 as of July 2026.
Based on current projections, beneficiaries could see monthly increases larger than the increase received this year.
Using current estimates:
- A 3.4% COLA would increase the average benefit by roughly $71 per month.
- A 3.6% COLA would increase the average benefit by roughly $75 per month.
Actual benefit increases vary depending on each recipient’s current monthly payment.
When will the official 2027 Social Security COLA be announced?
The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official 2027 COLA on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Why are 2027 COLA estimates getting attention now?
The latest forecasts follow inflation data released in August.
Because Social Security COLAs are based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W, analysts closely track inflation reports from July, August and September. Those three months are used to calculate the following year’s adjustment.
While inflation has cooled from some recent highs, it remains elevated enough that analysts still expect the 2027 COLA to exceed the 2.8% increase beneficiaries received in January 2026.
The combination of new inflation data and updated forecasts has driven renewed interest in the 2027 COLA outlook.
