Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon in upstate New York ahead of a cold front, with the potential for damaging winds and large hail in some areas.
The storms are expected to develop between about 3 and 9 p.m. EDT.
Severe weather risk
The area is under a risk for severe thunderstorms, mainly inland from the lakes.
Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat. Some thunderstorms could produce gusty winds, with a few isolated damaging wind gusts possible.
Isolated large hail also is possible.
Heavy rain possible
Some thunderstorms could produce brief, torrential downpours, particularly inland from the lakes.
However, the storms are expected to move through the area relatively quickly, which should limit the risk of flooding.

Thunderstorms should taper
off this evening, followed by scattered, light lake-effect rain late tonight. Temperatures will turn chilly.
