A Clifton Springs man died Tuesday after calling 911 and jumping from a fourth-story window, Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione said Wednesday. The New York state Attorney General's Office is investigating the incident.
Here's what to know.
Clifton Springs man jumps from fourth-story window
Bradley Young, 67, lived at the Foster Block apartment complex in the village of Clifton Springs.
Young called 911 Tuesday morning to report that his apartment was filling with fumes and that the fumes were causing him to have a headache, Cirencione said.
When officers and firefighters arrived, Young did not respond to the door. They forced their way into the apartment because they believed he could be injured, Cirencione said.
As officers and firefighters entered the apartment, Young jumped from a fourth-story
window, falling about 28 feet before landing on a second-story porch, according to Cirencione.
Young initially was unresponsive. Emergency responders performed life-saving measures and restored his pulse at the scene before taking him to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The fire department inspected Young's apartment and did not detect hazardous fumes or a gas leak, Cirencione said. It remains unclear why Young jumped from the window.
Why is the New York Attorney General investigating?
The New York state Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into law enforcement's decision to force entry into Young's apartment, Cirencione said.
Cirencione said he was confident there was no wrongdoing in the decision to enter the apartment but acknowledged that the Attorney General's Office has a responsibility to investigate the circumstances.
"What everybody did yesterday is what they should have done," Cirencione said. "You have a 911 call reporting not only a hazardous condition, but you've got a human being telling you that they're suffering medical consequences as a result."
Cirencione said officers who respond to a 911 call and find that the person does not answer the door have to consider whether the person's condition may have deteriorated.
The incident remains under investigation by the Clifton Springs Police Department and the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
