Cayden Wallace broke the game open with a first-inning grand slam, and the Rochester Red Wings rode a four-homer night to a 13-5 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Friday at PNC Field.
Rochester (66-44) sent nine men to the plate in the opening inning and scored six times. Phillip Glasser and Yohandy Morales scored on consecutive bases-loaded walks by Riley Adams and Sam Petersen before Wallace drove a grand slam to left field for his third homer of the season.
The RailRiders trimmed the deficit to 6-2 on Anthony Volpe’s two-run homer in the third, but Rochester answered in the fourth. Wallace singled, advanced on a walk and hit-by-pitch, then scored when Seaver King reached on a forceout.
Morales extended the lead with a solo
homer to left-center in the fifth, his 22nd of the season. Maxwell Romero Jr. followed with a solo shot in the sixth, his fourth homer in the last three games, to push Rochester’s advantage to 9-3.
The Red Wings added four insurance runs in the ninth. Romero’s two-out single scored Trey Lipscomb, and Leandro Pineda followed with a three-run homer to right-center that scored Wallace and Romero.
Wallace finished 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs. Romero went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Morales was 2-for-4 with two runs, a homer and an RBI in his first game back after a stint on the IL. Rochester collected 11 hits, drew seven walks and went 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Matt Krook earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief.
