Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills will open the 2026 NFL season in hostile territory when they face the Houston Texans on Sunday.
The Texans have had Allen's number his entire career. Including the playoffs, the 2024 NFL MVP is 1-4 against the Texans at Reliant Stadium. In 2025, Buffalo lost 23-19 to Houston, with Allen throwing more interceptions (2) than touchdowns (0).
That's why NFL analysts, who generally love the 9-year veteran and the Bills, are mixed on Buffalo's prospects in Week 1. A survey of early predictions found experts split on whether the Bills will win.
Let's take a look at what they're saying:
Bills vs. Texans odds, betting lines
(Odds as of Wednesday afternoon)
- Buffalo is a 1-point favorite.
- The over/under is 44.5 points.
- The moneyline: Bills -120 (bet $120 to win $100), Texans +100 (bet $100 to win $100).
Democrat and Chronicle: Texans 24, Bills 20
Sal Maiorana writes: "This is a tough opening assignment for the Bills and it’s difficult to envision a victory
given their ugly recent past in Houston. Yes, it’s a new season and nothing that happened in the past should matter, but one thing that hasn’t changed is Houston may have the best defense in the NFL. Until the Bills can prove they can handle that, on the road in NRG Stadium, the Texans are the pick to spoil Joe Brady’s debut."
AZ Central: Bills 23, Texans 20
Jeremy Cluff writes: "Could this be the game of the week? It had the smallest point spread in early odds, with the Bills favored by a point on the road at Houston. Josh Allen will deliver late."
Sports Illustrated: Take the OVER
Iain MacMillan writes: The Bills have added some key offensive pieces this offseason, most notably DJ Moore at wide receiver. On the other side of the ball, they're going to look extremely different with the likes of Matt Milano and Taron Johnson gone, while adding plenty of young pieces. The jury is out on whether or not that's going to make their defense better, but I think it's going to take them a few weeks to hit their stride. Meanwhile, I think the Bills' offense is going to look as explosive as ever.
My Week 1 strategy is going to be to generally fade the common narrative around the assumed best units in the NFL. The Rams fall under that banner, as I wrote about above, but so does the Texans' defense. Yes, they're likely once again going to be an elite defense, but are they good enough to justify a point total this low in a Week 1 game against the MVP favorite?
The Texans' offense is going to be healthy, and I expect them to surprise some people and be more effective than some bettors assume.
I'm going to bet the OVER in this fascinating AFC showdown.
Pick: OVER 44.5 (-110)
yahoo!sports: Texans +1
Frank Schwab writes: "Any good NFL defense has some level of physicality to it. Not many are as violent as the Houston Texans, however.
"Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen knows this well. He was sacked a career-high eight times in a 23-19 loss to the Texans last season. It's rare to see Allen not in control, but it was the Texans defense that took over that game.
"The Texans have a championship-level defense. There are stars at every level of it. They want to hit the opponent often and make it hurt. But defense doesn't sell as easily as a good offense, especially one with an elite quarterback. That is a reason the Bills are favored by a point in a great Week 1 matchup.
"It's hard for people to pick the team with C.J. Stroud at quarterback over Allen's team. But the pendulum has swung too far on Stroud after a truly awful playoff performance against the Patriots. Last season he was 12th in adjusted EPA (expected points added) per play, 15th in success rate and the Texans were 18th in passer rating. That's not great but it's not at a Deshaun Watson level either. He's middle of the road. And with a defense that has a legitimate claim as the best in the NFL, average QB play is good enough to win a lot of games.
"The Bills are my pick to win the AFC, but this is a tough matchup for them (and also, it wouldn't surprise me if the Texans are like the 2015 Broncos and ride a great defense to the Super Bowl). The pick is the Texans +1. Either way, this is a really fun matchup for the opener. Unless you're the Bills offense, which has to face a scary and fierce Texans defense to start the season."
Dimers: Bills 24, Texans 22
Dimers writes: "The numbers give the Bills a win probability of 58.1%, while the Texans have a win probability of 41.9%."
ESPN: Bills win
ESPN Analytics gives the Bills a 53.5% chance of winning.
