The 2026 ESL Rochester Fringe will use more than 40 venues when it returns from Sept. 15-26 this year with over 700 shows.
Festivalgoers will recognize returning venues, including the Eastman School of Music, RIT City Art Space, Parcel 5 and more. New venues are added each year, allowing venue managers to curate their own performance schedule.
Guests can also expect new and returning venues featuring unique architecture, visual art and performances. Here are some interesting venues to check out at the festival:
Unique venues at the 2026 ESL Rochester Fringe Festival
Austin Steward Plaza
Formerly known as the Major Charles Carroll Plaza, the renovated plaza is located in Downtown Rochester, between Main and Andrews Street. The $20 million project is the largest of the 13 ROC the Riverway projects that began with an initial
investment of $50 million from New York State. The riverfront space features park seating, a public promenade, green space, and space for public art.
During the festival, the venue will be hosting EcoVibes - Oil and Water Don’t Mix, a free, family-friendly, multidisciplinary event. Festivalgoers can attend the event at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sept. 19.
Location: Genesee River Trail, Rochester
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park
Located in the heart of Downtown Rochester, the park sits on a five-acre site that has been open since 1974. The park is divided into six areas, including a children’s area, a wading pool, a hockey rink converted to tennis and basketball courts, a garden promenade, and more.
The park is home to the annual and highly anticipated Fringe Street Beat, where local dancers can compete in 3-on-3 team battles for a chance to win the title of Fringe Street Beat Champions and $1,200.
Guests can attend the event from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 26.

The Garden Studio
New to the festival, The Garden Studio is a performing arts space in Dawn's Spiegelgarden at One Fringe Place. The venue is a studio-sized theater for shows with up to 60 people.
During the festival, the venue will be hosting multiple performances, some including:
- Just To Be Close to You, a contemporary clown show by Cam Poter, directly from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
- Bushwhacked Big Boozy Joy Fun Time Revival, an interactive, high-energy comedy spectacle hosted by Tim & Pammy Shea Fakker.
- Tea Party at the End of the World, a presentation of loose-leaf teas and parlor games inspired by the creator's time in the Arctic Circle.
Java’s Cafe
Located at 16 Gibbs St., the downtown cafe has been offering a variety of coffee, herbal tea and food options since 1992. Patrons can enjoy outdoor and indoor seating surrounded by artworks, restrooms and a pool table.
At 6 p.m. Sept. 17 and Sept. 19, festivalgoers can see Sock Puppet Secrets, a free interactive puppet show fit for all ages.
RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium
Since 1968, the Rochester Museum & Science Center’s Strasenburgh Planetarium has hosted star shows, giant-screen films, educational programs, special events, features and more.
At 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17-19, the planetarium will be hosting Deep Fields: A Synambient Journey. Composers Gerry Szymanski & James Tabbi will share ambient electronic soundscapes featuring imagery from the James Webb Space Telescope.
Dawn's Spiegelgarden
The Spiegelgarden will return to One Fringe Place at 100 W. Chestnut St. Now named Dawn's Spiegelgarden, the popular venue holds the historic Spiegeltent and, new to the festival, The Garden Studio.
Festivalgoers can expect several shows in Dawn’s Spiegelgarden, with limited edition tickets to unique performances. Dashboard Dramas XII is an intimate theatre experience where guests rotate between cars to view four new 10-minute plays. The one-of-a-kind show offers eight tickets per performance.
With only four tickets per show, Bushwhacked: Tim and Pammy Shea's Pamper Camper is an improvised performance inside Tim and Pammy Shea's trailer.
