There are two Section V field hockey tournaments, and Class B has an obvious team to beat in undefeated Pittsford Mendon.
Class A isn't nearly as clear. Which team leads the pack?
This was a tough season for the Webster Schroeder Warriors (1-12-3). We'll narrow the list of candidates to four and let readers choose the Class A team to beat.
Won-loss records are through October 22, according to sectionv.org. The Section V Class A Tournament starts rolling Monday.
- Fairport Red Raiders (2-12-2): No question, the defending champions have taken some lumps. Five of their losses were by a goal, including 1-0 Oct. 1 to Irondequoit, a contender to challenge Pittsford Mendon in Class B. It seems that goalkeeper Sasha Haselbauer is the team's most consistent player.
- Webster Thomas Titans (7-6-3): This has been a roller-coaster ride for the 2025 Class B finalists. Thomas was 3-1 in its last four regular season games, including a 2-1 loss to Mendon on Oct. 15. That game went into overtime. Goals by Kyla Near and Maddie Slack provided a 2-1 win Oct. 13 over Irondequoit.
- Hilton Cadets (11-3-2): Take wins over Irondequoit and Webster Thomas into the tournament. The losses were to Pittsford Sutherland (Oct. 17), Pittsford Mendon (Sept. 29) and Penfield (Sept. 21). Ryleigh Lent and Reagan Lent might be the players to watch on this team.
- Penfield Patriots (11-2-3): Won their first eight games, all in September. Maryn Tellex scored the game-winning goal in overtime Sept. 21 against Hilton. Closed the regular season schedule with a 1-1 tie with Sutherland and a 2-1 loss to Mendon. The team's other loss came Sept. 29, 1-0 at Irondequoit. The ties on their record are with Webster Schroeder, Hilton and Sutherland.
