The Buffalo Bills begin the 2026 season with one of their toughest tests, a road game against the Houston Texans as part of a tough opening stretch that includes several playoff contenders.
Houston has become one of the AFC's rising powers behind an elite defense that may be the best overall unit in the NFL, making this a significant early measuring stick for Buffalo. The Bills have struggled terribly in Houston, losing all four games during which Josh Allen was their quarterback.
Still, Buffalo enters the season with Super Bowl expectations and confidence in an offense built around Allen's playmaking ability.

Frank Gore Jr., Greg Dortch elevated from practice squad

With running back Ty Johnson listed as questionable, it seems as if he will do a pre-game workout to see how he feels, and if it’s a no go, then Frank Gore Jr. will be active as the third running back behind James Cook and Ray Davis.
Greg Dortch was also called up and the thinking is that he’ll be the Bills’ punt returner for the game, then serve as a bottom of the depth chart wide receiver in the game who would play offense only if there’s an injury.
This could be the start of a three-game tryout for Dortch to permanently lock down the punt return duties. Teams can use three practice squad elevations per season on a player and after that, he either has to stay on the practice squad for the rest of the year or be elevated to the 53-man roster. If Dortch excels in the role, he could get a 53-man spot.
