The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Walworth Fire Department involving a former member of the department.
Investigation began in February
According to the sheriff's office, the investigation began in February and remains active.
Authorities said no additional details will be released at this time to avoid compromising the ongoing criminal investigation.
Former member resigned
In a statement Wednesday, the Walworth Fire Department said it became aware of "serious allegations" involving one of its members and has been cooperating with law enforcement throughout the investigation.
The department said the individual was placed on a leave of absence before later resigning.
"We take these matters very seriously and are cooperating with law enforcement
authorities throughout their investigation," the department said in a statement. "We remain committed to transparency and upholding the trust of the community."
The fire department directed any questions about the investigation to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
No charges have been announced.
