Rochester firefighters rescued two women who became trapped in the Genesee River Gorge near Maplewood Park on Wednesday afternoon while attempting to retrieve the remains of a dog.
Emergency responders were called to Maplewood Park around 4:15 p.m. Aug. 26 for a report of a person trapped in the gorge, according to the Rochester Police Department.
Officers found two women on a steep cliff. Police said a 24-year-old Rochester woman had slid partway down the cliff and suffered minor injuries, while a 58-year-old Rochester woman was hanging over the edge and holding onto a tree.
Firefighters use rope, boat to rescue women
Rochester officers reached the 58-year-old woman and held onto her until firefighters arrived and used rope-rescue techniques to pull her to safety, police said.
The younger
woman made her way to the bottom of the gorge and the river embankment. Rochester firefighters then rescued her by boat.
Both women were taken to an area hospital for evaluation. Neither suffered serious injuries, according to police.
"This was incredible work by RPD and RFD that was nothing short of heroic," Rochester police said in a news release.
Women were trying to retrieve dog remains
Relatives told media at the scene that the women were attempting to retrieve the remains of a dog that had been found in a bag near the Genesee River when they became trapped.
