Two men died Sunday afternoon in a boating incident on Kyser Lake in Herkimer County, according to New York State Police.
Troopers responded to the lake in the town of Manheim around 2:40 p.m. Aug. 9 for
a reported boating incident involving two fatalities.
What happened
A preliminary investigation determined that two boats were docked next to each other when a 78-year-old man entered the water and began experiencing a medical emergency.
The operator of the man's boat entered the water to assist him, leaving the boat unoccupied. The boat then began drifting away.
A 65-year-old man entered the unoccupied boat and attempted to maneuver it toward the two men in the water, State Police said.
The boat inadvertently moved forward, struck a rock ledge and ejected the 65-year-old man into the water. The boat's propeller then struck him.
Both men died at scene
Both men sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
No other injuries were reported, and all other people involved were accounted for.
The investigation remains ongoing.
