Rochester police have identified the teenage girl who was killed during a series of overnight shootings as officers dispersed a large, disorderly crowd along North Clinton Avenue.
Police said 14-year-old Zahnia Barr, of Rochester, was fatally shot early Saturday and investigators believe she was not the intended target.
No suspects have been arrested.
Teen killed during crowd dispersal
According to the Rochester Police Department, several hundred people gathered along North Clinton Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Friday.
Officers began dispersing the crowd from the area of North Clinton Avenue and Upper Falls Boulevard as part of a planned operation. As officers moved north, they encountered multiple instances of violent and riotous behavior, police said.
When officers reached the area of North
Clinton Avenue and Morrill Street, multiple shots were fired within the crowd. Officers deployed riot control agents, and the crowd dispersed.
Afterward, officers found Barr on Morrill Street with at least one gunshot wound to her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said it appears Barr was not the intended target of the shooting.
Three others wounded in separate shootings
Police are also investigating three additional non-fatal shootings that occurred during the overnight hours.
At about 12:37 a.m., a 26-year-old Rochester man arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower body. Investigators later determined the shooting occurred at an unknown location while he was elsewhere in the city. His injuries were not life-threatening.
At about 2:05 a.m., officers responded to Weaver Street near Joseph Avenue, where they found a 38-year-old Rochester woman with a gunshot wound to her lower body. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
About 2:18 a.m., officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation near Norton Street and North Clinton Avenue. A short time later, a 41-year-old Monroe County man arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower body. Detectives determined he was shot near the ShotSpotter location. His injuries were also not life-threatening.
Investigation continues
The Rochester Police Department's Major Crimes Homicide Unit is investigating Barr's death and is also working to determine whether the overnight shootings are connected.
No suspects are in custody.
