C.J. Gardner-Johnson declined to answer specifics about the injury he suffered in Buffalo Bills training camp the other day, but he had plenty to say about the Week 1 opponent, the Houston Texans.
Gardner-Johnson began 2025 with the Texans after being traded there in the offseason by the Eagles. He suffered a knee injury early in training camp, and while he was able to return to action in time for the regular season, he played in only three games before the Texans released him.
And that was the subject of his ire Thursday when he was asked about the Bills opening the season in Houston.
“It was a good team, not saying nothing on the front office or staff, but the players that are there are good, you know,” he began. “All the (BS) that came out,
it was lies, but whatever. I just can't wait to see them.”
Gardner-Johnson took issue with some of the things that were said about his time in Houston, specifically that he didn’t fit the culture of the team. When he was pressed to explain his side of things he said, “Y'all still ain't got no confirmed real story from what really happened. Let’s talk about that.”
OK, go for it.
“Where’s the real story. What did I really do?” he said. “They released me because I wasn't gelling with the team and I didn't fit well. Well, why hasn’t the coach (DeMeco Ryans) spoke up about it? After the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars they said I didn't fit well. We were already starting 0-3, so how can it possibly be on one person?”
One of the concerns about signing Gardner-Johnson to a one-year deal that could reach $6 million if he hits certain incentives is that he has had a tumultuous journey in the NFL bouncing from team to team, and it always seems to be off the field and/or locker room things that turn teams off.
Beane even acknowledged that when he was asked if it was a risky move and he was asked for a progress report when the Bills checked in at St. John Fisher University last week.
“I think when you get to Chauncey, he was a guy that has had success,” Beane said. “He's bounced around, but not because of the lack of talent. He's made big plays, impact plays. He can find the ball, he's a ball hawk, he will strike you, to say it politically correct, but he will knock your head off. He brings a great skill set to the position.

“Yes, you're asking around to people that have been on teams (with him), and I would say a lot of things were very positive. He's super competitive, and sometimes his competitiveness, maybe he went a little far or whatever. He came in here and we talked about those things before we signed him. I thought he was open and honest about things that he thought he could have done better, and then maybe he thought things were interpreted differently, maybe in some situations than what he was trying to do.”
Clearly, he can’t wait to get to Houston for the season opener.
“I'm glad you brought up that Texans (crap); you got me pissed now,” he said.
Is that a good thing, he was asked, and his response was, “Yeah, it’s a good thing. I mean, it's a good team. I'm not putting nothing past them, it’s just the situation how they handled me, it just wasn't respectful. So as a grown man, I feel like when you see me, you see me.”
