A line of severe thunderstorms is moving across parts of Central New York Thursday evening, bringing the threat of 60 mph wind gusts and large hail.
The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of Otsego and Chenango counties, while a broader severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect through 9 p.m.
Severe thunderstorm warnings issued
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for northwestern Otsego and east-central Chenango counties until 6 p.m. Thursday. The storm was near New Berlin at about 5:10 p.m. and was moving northeast at 25 mph.
The National Weather Service said the storm could produce 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Areas including New Berlin, Hartwick, Pittsfield, Burlington, Morris and Laurens were affected.
A separate severe
thunderstorm warning for northeastern Otsego County was in effect until 6:15 p.m. The storm was near Cooperstown at about 5:10 p.m. and was moving east at 30 mph.
That storm also was capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, with Cooperstown, Middlefield, Westville, Springfield and Cherry Valley among the communities affected.
A severe thunderstorm warning for west-central Chenango County was in effect until 5:45 p.m. The storm was near Smithville Flats at about 5:08 p.m. and was moving northeast at 20 mph.
The storm could produce 60 mph wind gusts and hail up to 1.25 inches in diameter.
Severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect
Severe Thunderstorm Watch 631 remains in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday for 16 counties in Central New York, including Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins and Yates counties.
The watch also includes parts of northeastern Pennsylvania.
Cities included in the watch area include Binghamton, Corning, Cortland, Elmira, Ithaca, Oneonta, Penn Yan, Syracuse, Utica and Watkins Glen.
What to do during a severe thunderstorm
The National Weather Service advises residents in areas under a severe thunderstorm warning to move indoors and take shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.
Residents should stay away from windows and continue monitoring weather alerts as storms move through the region.
