.Tractor and hay wagon lose control on hill
Donald G. Campbell, 70, of Sherburne in Chenango County, was driving a Kubota farm tractor pulling a hay wagon east on Granville Hill Hardscrabble Road in Columbus around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, according to New York State Police.
As the tractor and wagon traveled downhill, they began to gain momentum. Campbell
attempted to brake, causing the tractor’s wheels to lock, said Trooper Aga Tinker. The tractor and wagon skidded across the dirt road before the tractor jackknifed and the wagon detached.
The town of Columbus, where the crash occurred, is in northeastern Chenango County, about 35 miles south of Utica.
Several people injured
The tractor rolled onto its side, throwing Campbell from the driver’s seat and trapping him underneath, Tinker said.
The hay wagon, which was carrying 12 people ages 3 to 62, also rolled onto its side, she said. A 9-year-old boy and a 47-year-old woman were thrown from the wagon. Both suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Campbell suffered serious head and arm injuries and was taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica, Tinker said. Doctors amputated his hand because of the severity of his injuries.
State police continue to investigate the crash.
