It's time to take a look at the standout performers from Section V.
Your vote will determine who will be the Turf Masters Girls Sports Athlete of the Week for September 21 - 27. The players' credentials are listed above the poll — which will be live until 8 p.m. Wednesday. The winner will be announced on our Instagram page Thursday.
The nominees are chosen by our sports reporters. If you would like to call attention to an athlete's performance to be considered for the nomination, please email sports@democratandchronicle.com. All athletes who play on Section V girls teams are eligible to be nominated.
Now, let's meet the candidates.
Anna Barlow
Perry volleyball junior led the Yellowjackets to two victories over defending Section V champions, including nine aces,
15 kills and 15 digs in a five-set thriller against reigning state champion York. Also totaled seven aces, nine kills and 21 digs in a win over CG Finney.
Morgan Breuer
Penn Yan tennis junior logged her ninth consecutive singles victory during the Mustangs’ victory over Waterloo.
Maya Churchman
A freshman on the Arkport/Canaseraga cross country team who won the small schools 5K race during the John Izzo Cross Country Classic in Letchworth State Park. Churchman finished about 13 seconds ahead of the runner-up when she completed in 18 minutes, 37.8 seconds.
Rylee Conlon
Irondequoit field hockey forward scored five goals in two wins. Conlon scored both goals, the game-winner with 28 seconds remaining in overtime, in a 2-1 win over Pittsford Sutherland. The Eagles also defeated Eastridge 4-0. Conlon scored three goals.
Haley Drake
Greece Athena soccer player racked up seven goals and two assists in a three-win week for the Trojans.
Brynnleigh Fischer
Irondequoit volleyball sophomore provided the game-winning kill in a five-set thriller against Penfield. She completed the Eagles’ 16-14 victory in the fifth set, one of her 15 kills on the night. Also logged nine digs and two blocks.
Aspen Flynn
Honeoye soccer player totaled five goals and two assists across three games. That includes both of the Bulldogs’ goals in a 2-0 shutout win over Arkport-Canaseraga on Monday.
Grace Janczak
Victor soccer player scored the lone goal as the Blue Devils fended off Spencerport 1-0 on Tuesday.
Dani McDermott
Mynderse soccer player recorded a hat trick in Monday’s shutout win against Finger Lakes rival South Seneca/Romulus.
Julia Mirabelli
Victor volleyball senior reached 1,000 career kills as part of a 12-kill, four-ace evening against Webster Thomas. She also recorded a whopping 34 kills in a five-set victory over defending state champion Webster Schroeder.
Julianna Pehrson
Waterloo volleyball senior stood out defensively in a five-set win against Newark, totaling 54 digs to go with her eight kills and eight aces.
Reagan Paolini
A freshman on the Churchville-Chili/Hilton golf team who shot the best nine-hole score in a match, a three-under par 32 at Penfield Country Club.
Irene Sesnie
Honeoye Falls-Lima senior won the large schools race at the John Izzo Cross Country Classic in Letchworth State Park. Her time on the 5K course was 18 minutes, 42.5 seconds, about 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Maya Wiitanen
Canandaigua volleyball senior surpassed 1,000 career digs during a straight-set win over Greece Athena. She totaled 17 digs on the night.
