The Ontario County Sheriff's Office has released new details about the deadly crash involving a medical bus and a dump truck in Hopewell on Wednesday afternoon.
Here's the latest on what we know about the fatal crash.
Medical bus collides with dump truck
A medical transport bus was traveling north on Freshour Road when it entered the intersection and crossed into the path of a 10-wheel dump truck around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, deputies said.
The dump truck struck the driver's side of the bus, where passengers are typically seated.
Ontario County's dispatch center received numerous calls reporting the crash and the severity of the injuries. Some callers reported seeing passengers "hanging out the windows of the bus," Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione said at the scene.
A
deputy on patrol was the first to arrive and confirmed the severity of the crash, Cirencione said.
Bus carried assisted living residents
The bus was carrying six adult passengers. Five were residents of an assisted living facility for people with developmental disabilities, according to the Sheriff's Office. The sixth passenger was an employee of the facility.
1 dead, four seriously injured
One bus passenger, a 32-year-old woman, was killed in the crash, Cirencione said.
Four other passengers suffered serious injuries and were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. Three of those passengers were transported by medical helicopter, deputies said.
The injured passengers, all residents of the assisted living facility, included:
- A 27-year-old woman who remained in the hospital's emergency department.
- A 41-year-old man who was undergoing surgery at Strong for significant orthopedic injuries.
- A 32-year-old woman who was listed in satisfactory condition at Strong.
- A 31-year-old woman who was treated and released.
Deputies did not release the names of any of the passengers involved.
Another passenger and the bus driver, a 75-year-old Phelps man, suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospitals in Ontario County, according to the Sheriff's Office. The driver was treated and released.
The medical status of the final passenger, a 44-year-old man who worked for the facility, was not immediately available.
Intersection known for crashes
The intersection is controlled by stop signs for northbound and southbound traffic on Freshour Road. Deputies said the intersection is "known for crashes."
Traffic traveling on Route 488 is not required to stop at the intersection.
"Specifically for northbound vehicles that are going to cross Route 488, it is a challenge," deputies said at the scene. "You have to stop and definitely take an extra second to make sure nobody's coming from either direction."
The intersection was closed for about five hours following Wednesday's fatal crash.
Investigation continues
The body of the woman who died at the scene was taken to Geneva General Hospital for an autopsy and to determine her cause of death.
Deputies continue to investigate the fatal crash. The New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit and Crash Team are assisting with the investigation, which is expected to take several weeks.
Once the investigation is complete, deputies will review the case with the Ontario County District Attorney's Office to determine whether any charges will be filed.
