ORCHARD PARK - The AFC East standings, and the long-standing rivalry the Buffalo Bills have had with the New England Patriots which dates back to the births of both franchises in 1960, doesn’t exactly move the needle for Bills coach Joe Brady.
“I don't give a damn about that,” Brady said when he was asked about coaching his first game against a division opponent when the Bills host the defending AFC champion Patriots Sunday at Highmark Stadium. “No one cares if you're 3-0 or 0-3 right now. We have an opportunity to go into this fourth game of the season, just trying to have an ability to go 1-0. The rest of the stuff will take care of itself.”
Ugh. Brady has already mastered Coachspeak 101. Even Sean McDermott always admitted that division games
were always bigger, always more intense, but Brady simply wasn’t having any of it the other day.
“Sure as hell hope not,” he said when asked about the increase in intensity, especially in a game where the Patriots are going to be desperate to win in order to avoid falling three full games behind the Bills in the standings. “If we are changing who we are week to week, then we don't have the competitive stamina that we're preaching that we're talking about.

“It should be a nameless, faceless opponent every single week. We know in the NFL every single week is going to be tough and a tremendous team that we're going against. Tremendous coaching staff, they do a great job over there, but we have a lot of things that we have to control over here and if we approach this week any different because it's a division game, then I'm not doing my job.”
Some might say if he’s not preaching to his players, especially the younger ones, the added importance of division games, he’s not doing his job.
Perhaps a veteran like Bradley Chubb can provide some context for Brady.
“Same mindset (as any other game), same attack that you want to have, same philosophy and everything of just worrying about what we do, making it the best version of ourselves, but when you get into game time, those juices start flowing a little differently, you know what’s on the line,” he said. “You don’t play different, but you just feel a little different. And they hate us, we hate them. And that’s everybody in the division.”
