Parts of New York could see the season’s first frost this week as a blast of cold air sends temperatures tumbling across the state.
According to AccuWeather, high pressure from Canada will usher in a wave of cold air Monday night, bringing a cooldown across the Northeast. Inland areas of New York near the Great Lakes could see frost overnight Monday into Tuesday, AccuWeather reported.
Frost possible at New York's higher elevations
"Under a clear sky and diminishing winds, a frost or freeze will be possible in normally colder locations across the Great Lakes region early Tuesday morning," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said.
The greatest risk of frost will be in inland and more rural areas, particularly at higher elevations. Northern areas of the Adirondacks are among the locations
expected to experience a "killing freeze," Anderson said.
Areas along the Lake Ontario and Lake Erie shorelines are expected to avoid frost overnight because of warmer lake waters, according to AccuWeather. Larger cities are also expected to remain warmer than surrounding rural areas because of the urban heat island effect.
The historical average first freeze across much of the region occurs during the first half of October, with higher elevations typically seeing their first freeze earlier.
Frost could damage plants
Frost could damage or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left unprotected. Residents should consider covering or bringing in tender plants ahead of the cold temperatures.
Early-season frosts and freezes are not uncommon across much of the Great Lakes and Northeast, according to AccuWeather.
