New York runs on Dunkin', according to a study analyzing the most popular coffee chains in each state based on website search data.
According to consumer health researchers at Innerbody, New York, along
with much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, favors Dunkin' over other coffee chains.
The Massachusetts-based coffee and doughnut chain was the most-searched coffee brand in 10 of the 50 states, including Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and several New England states.
Dunkin' has had a strong presence in the Northeast since 1950. The company dropped "Donuts" from its name in 2019, though it continues to sell doughnuts and other baked goods at more than 14,200 locations worldwide.
What is the most popular coffee chain in America?
Despite Dunkin's dominance in the Northeast, Starbucks is the favorite coffee chain in more states across the country.
Based on website search data, 21 states favor the Seattle-based coffee chain, including Southeastern states from North Carolina to Florida, Midwestern states such as Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio, and Western states including Montana, Colorado and Wyoming.
What other regional coffee shops made the list?
While Dunkin' and Starbucks dominate the national coffee chain landscape, some states favor regional or hometown brands over the major national chains.
The third-most popular coffee chain in the country based on state-level website searches is 7 Brew, a drive-thru coffee chain founded in Arkansas in 2017.
Southern states including Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Oklahoma favor 7 Brew based on how often residents search for its locations online. The chain started with seven locations in 2020 and has since expanded to more than 800 locations across 38 states, with most of its locations concentrated in the South and Midwest.
Dutch Bros. Coffee, founded in Oregon, is the most-searched coffee chain in four states: Oregon, Idaho, Utah and New Mexico.
Caribou Coffee is a favorite in Minnesota and North Dakota, while Scooter's Coffee is favored in Nebraska and Iowa.
Some regional chains were the most-searched coffee brands in just one state, including Philz Coffee in its home state of California and P.J.'s Coffee in its home state of Louisiana.
Arizona's favorite coffee chain based on search history is Black Rock Coffee Bar, an Oregon-based coffee brand with a large presence in the state.
