Deone Walker is difficult to miss.
At 6-foot-7 and 331 pounds, that's true before the Buffalo Bills defensive tackle even does anything.
Then the football gets snapped.
Walker needed only 10 defensive snaps to make his presence felt in the Bills' 29-14 preseason victory over the Carolina Panthers
. He recorded three tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss as Buffalo's starting defense overwhelmed Carolina early. But the thing that impressed defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard most wasn't something anyone watching from the stands could see.
It was what Walker saw.
"He's a student of the game. Like, he's really bright," Leonhard said. "In game, it's really impressive just to see what he can come back and communicate on the sideline, whether it's things
he heard, things he saw."
Leonhard saw it throughout Walker's brief appearance.
"That was really cool to see as a coach because not every player can do that and not every player wants to do that," Leonhard said. "They just go play ball. But he sees everything around him in real time, which is really cool for a defensive lineman."

Walker's physical ability was noticeable Saturday.
He helped blow up Carolina's second possession when he got into the backfield and dropped running back Trevor Etienne for a 4-yard loss. Two plays later, Walker beat Panthers guard Chandler Zavala and brought down quarterback Bryce Young for an 8-yard sack.
The Panthers punted again.
Carolina's first three possessions produced three punts and 17 yards. The Bills' starting defense was on the field for only nine snaps before most of the starters were done for the afternoon.
"Obviously in the game he flashed that dynamic ability he has," Leonhard said.

Leonhard is excited to figure out how many different ways he can use it.
"For us, it's going to be fun finding ways to move him and put him in different places," Leonhard said. "Ed (Oliver) gets brought up a lot, but Deone is no different, the flexibility we can have for him, whether it's playing nose, bumping out and playing 4i. Different things within the scheme."
Walker likes the autonomy that comes with it.
"Just being able to play more free. That's the main thing," Walker said. "Knowing that (Terrel Bernard), Ed (Oliver), T.J. (Sanders), all them guys, they've got my back. If I'm getting the impression it's one play and I try to take a shot, I know they're going to cover me."
That trust has become an important part of Walker's transition into Leonhard's defense.
"The way that our D-line group is, those are my brothers," Walker said. "We talk every day. It's just being 100% comfortable with them, having that camaraderie. Having the trust if something happens and I mess up, I'm going to hold myself accountable because I know you are."
Deone Walker is building on promising rookie season
Walker's performance against Carolina didn't come out of nowhere.
The Bills drafted Walker in the fourth round with the No. 109 overall pick in 2025 after his production dipped during his final season at Kentucky.
Walker quickly outplayed his fourth-round draft position.
He appeared in all 17 games as a rookie and started 16, finishing with 39 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, four passes defended and a sack. He also started both playoff games.
"I felt like he was an emerging stud last year," Bills head coach Joe Brady said. "He's so mature. His size and length and versatility up front. In a limited role today you felt him on the football field."
Walker is encouraged in the first year of Leonhard's defense.
"A lot of question marks I feel like are getting answered internally within the scheme, within our defense," Walker said. "That's the biggest plus. Even some of the things where I was like, 'I don't really know if that's going to work, but I'll try it.' And it worked."
