New York will begin accepting applications for its Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) on Nov. 2, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced, as rising heating costs put pressure on household budgets ahead of winter.
The program helps eligible households pay their heating bills. Hochul also directed state officials to increase benefits for eligible households that rely on delivered heating fuel, including oil and kerosene.
Who qualifies for HEAP in New York?
Families of four earning up to $82,000 may qualify for HEAP, Hochul said. Some New Yorkers receive benefits automatically, while others must apply.
Residents can check eligibility and learn how to apply at the state's HEAP website.
More than 1.5 million HEAP benefits were issued during the previous heating season, according to the state, and
a similar number are expected this winter.
Heating oil and kerosene costs rise
Hochul said heating oil prices have increased 67% and kerosene prices have risen 50%, adding to the costs faced by households that depend on those fuels to heat their homes.
The state is increasing the heating benefit for eligible households that have oil, kerosene or other heating fuels delivered to their homes.
