Rochester-area 9/11 events: Sept. 11

Communities across the Rochester region will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with ceremonies, vigils, concerts and other remembrances.

Here are some of the events planned for Friday, Sept. 11.

8 a.m. — MCC Remembrance Ceremony

Monroe Community College's annual September 11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Remembrance Monument

outside Building 10, 1000 East Henrietta Road.

Paul Dondorfer, a 1998 MCC graduate and former first responder during the Sept. 11 attacks, will be the keynote speaker.

8:30 a.m. — Brockport remembrance

The Brockport Fire District's annual Day of Reflection & Remembrance begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Firefighter's Memorial Monument, 237 S. Main St.

An honor guard of local first responders, military members and community members will remain at the memorial throughout the day. A closing ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

8:30 a.m. — East Rochester ceremony

The East Rochester Fire Department will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at 415 Main St. The event is open to the public.

8:30 a.m. — RIT vigil and flag display

Rochester Institute of Technology will hold its annual 9/11 vigil and flag display from 8:30 a.m. to 10:03 a.m. at the Sentinel in front of the Student Alumni Union.

The display will include 2,977 miniature U.S. flags, one for each person killed in the Sept. 11 attacks. Taps will be played at 8:46, 9:03, 9:37 and 10:03 a.m.

8:46 a.m. — Irondequoit remembrance ceremony

The Irondequoit Police Department's annual September 11 Remembrance Ceremony begins at 8:46 a.m. at Irondequoit Town Hall, 1280 Titus Ave.

10 a.m. — Spencerport wreath-laying

A 9/11 wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Spencerport Fire District Station 1, 175 Lyell Ave.

11 a.m. — First responders memorial dedication

A new 9/11 First Responders Memorial will be dedicated at 11 a.m. at Gary Beikirch Memorial Park, 1440 South Ave., Rochester.

11:30 a.m. — Eastman remembrance concert

The Eastman School of Music's Horn Choir will perform a 25th anniversary remembrance concert at 11:30 a.m. at Kilbourn Hall, 22 Gibbs St.

Members of the U.S. Army Field Band will join Eastman students and faculty. Tickets are not required.

3 p.m. — St. John Fisher stair climb

St. John Fisher University will hold a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at 3 p.m. at Kearney Hall in Pittsford. Participants will climb the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs in tribute to those killed in the attacks.

5:30 p.m. — Webster memorial ceremony

The Webster Village Board's September 11 Memorial Ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 28 North Ave.

6 p.m. — Canandaigua remembrance

American Legion Canandaigua Post 256 will hold a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony from 6 to 7 p.m. at 454 N. Main St. A reception will follow.

6 p.m. — Chili Fire Department ceremony

The Chili Fire Department's annual 9/11 ceremony begins at 6 p.m. at its memorial, 3231 Chili Ave. The memorial includes a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center.

9/11 ceremonies planned across New York

Communities across New York are marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11 with ceremonies, memorials, concerts and other events. In Rochester, Monroe Community College will hold its annual remembrance ceremony at 8 a.m., followed by an 8:30 a.m. remembrance at the East Rochester Fire Department. Eastman School of Music will host a 9/11 remembrance concert at 11:30 a.m.

Other commemorations planned around the state include:

Rochester: The New York Legacy of Heroes will hold a remembrance ride and concert Saturday, Sept. 12. The motorcycle run will depart from Lakeshore Hockey Arena and end at Barnard Exempts, followed by a memorial ceremony, live music, vendors and food trucks.
Hudson Falls: American Legion Post 574 will hold a 25th anniversary ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday at the post's pavilion.
Albany: The Albany Police Department will hold a community volunteer and neighborhood cleanup initiative Saturday, Sept. 12, as part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
New York City: Families of 9/11 victims will gather at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza Friday as the names of the 2,983 people killed in the 2001 attacks and 1993 World Trade Center bombing are read aloud, followed by seven moments of silence. The ceremony is not open to the public but will be streamed online.
New York City: The annual Tribute in Light will illuminate the night sky Friday with two beams of light representing the World Trade Center towers.
New York City: The FDNY Firefighters Memorial will hold a ceremony honoring the 343 FDNY members who died on 9/11.
New York City: A remembrance will be held at the Staten Island Postcards Memorial honoring Staten Island residents who died in the attacks.
New York City: The public can visit FDNY Ten House at 124 Liberty St. throughout the day Friday to pay respects.
New York City: The FDNY Fire Museum will hold its annual wreath-laying ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
New York City: The New York Yankees and New York Mets will play at Yankee Stadium Friday, with a 6:30 p.m. ceremony honoring victims and first responders.
Utica: The 12th annual CNY Memorial Stair Climb will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7 a.m. at the Utica State Office Building.
Buffalo: The Buffalo Fire Department is selling 25th anniversary commemorative pint glasses, with proceeds supporting the WNYIA and Wall of Gratitude project.
Buffalo/Cheektowaga: The Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K Run & Walk will be held Sept. 19 at the Bellevue Fire Company in Cheektowaga, with proceeds supporting victims and families of victims of the attacks.
